Soon after my wife and I moved to Worthing in 1980 we went for a walk along the sea front one Sunday afternoon. There were very few people about and we wondered where everyone could be. We decided to walk along the pier and again could see very few people. As we got towards the end of the pier we could hear mechanical noises coming from one of the buildings and so looked in to find that it was full of people playing on the fruit machines. There must have been many more people in other parts of the town but it is one of our earliest memories of the town that so many people were in a small building near the end of the pier.
